Why "p.h. balanced?"
“p.h.” is Piper Hendricks, a human rights lawyer who, after years of practice as a civil litigator, founded p.h. balanced films on the principle that direct action by informed consumers can create tangible social change. (And who knew that film, rather than legal briefs, was the best way to reach consumers!) Piper explains:
“When I told people about the problems that I saw around the world through my human rights cases, each person immediately responded that he or she did not want to fund those problems with the everyday goods they buy; they wanted more information so that they could support companies that had ethical practices instead. What a powerful reaction! Seeing how deeply people wanted to be ethical in their buying decisions and how little information was easily available to them, I wanted to reach an audience on a much larger scale – and how better to do that than film? |
And so I created p.h. balanced films with one goal: raise awareness of how each and every one of us is linked to the rest of the world through the goods we buy and how we – both consumers and companies – can ensure human rights are respected in the making of the products we use. I believe in the power of companies to have a significant impact in the world and in the power of consumers to ensure that impact is a positive one.
At the same time, I fully recognize that these issues are not simple and that some problems may not have an easy fix. It is extremely important to me that the films we produce at p.h. balanced films present a thorough and fair view of the topics we address. In our quest to provide a *balanced* perspective, we seek the views of *everyone* involved.” |
